Museum Assistant
Internship, Full-time

Duration: 29 weeks
Start date: September 8th, 2020
End date: March 31st, 2021
Hours and Wage: $15.00/hour for 32.5 hours/week

The Elgin County Railway Museum is recruiting a recent post-secondary graduate for the full-time contract position of Museum Assistant. The successful candidate for this position will provide assistance with collection rehousing and cataloging, assist with the supplemental research, digital media design, and installation of new exhibits for the 2021 year, assist with special events and facility rentals, and assist with the development and implementation of marketing initiatives. This position will support the work of the Museum staff, covering all facets of Museum operations. The Museum Assistant will take the lead on social media management, provide support for collections and exhibit work, provide support for special events and facility rentals, and will also be trained to provide support in the gift shop and providing museum tours. They will work as a team with other staff and volunteers to assist with other museum duties as needed.

Qualifications & Expectations:
– Recent graduate from post-secondary institution
– Museum Studies, History, Library Studies, Information Management, Information Technology, Archeology, Anthropology, or Arts & Humanities Major
– Interest in local, railway or Canadian history
– Fluent in English, bilingualism an asset
– Comfortable speaking to large groups and interacting with the public
– Friendly, outgoing personality
– Team player
– Adaptable to changing priorities
– Strong written and computer skills
– Detail-oriented, well-organized and have strong time management skills
– Artifact cataloging experience an asset
– Exhibit research, writing, and/or panel design an asset
– Marketing and social media skills an asset
– Previous Museum experience an asset
– Willingness to learn new things

Eligibility:
An individual may be eligible for an internship if they:
• are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible);
• are legally entitled to work in Canada;
• are between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
• are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment;
• will not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with the program;
• are unemployed or underemployed;
• are a college or university graduate;
• are not receiving Employment Insurance (EI) benefits while employed with the program; and
• have not previously participated in or been paid under this or any other Career Focus internship program funded under the Government of Canada’s Youth Employment Strategy.

Collection Rehousing and Digitizing Cataloging Clerk
Part-time

Duration: 26 weeks, part-time
Start date: September 14th, 2020
End date: February 22nd, 2021
Hours and Wage: $14.25/hour for 20 hours/week

The Elgin County Railway Museum is recruiting 2 students for the part-time, position of Collections Rehousing and Digitizing Cataloging Clerk. The successful candidate for this position will provide support for rehousing vulnerable collections to a new location, including large artifacts and paper archiving. This position will support the work of the Collection Committee by photographing, cataloging and entering artifacts into the online collection database, as well as photographing and digitizing previous collection records. They will work as a team with other staff and volunteers to assist with preparation and public programming for special events as needed.
Work Schedule will be Monday-Friday part-time with hours arranged around school schedule, with all 520 hours being completed before end date of February 22nd 2020.

Qualifications & Expectations:
– Student pursing post secondary education preferably in History, Arts, Library or Museum Studies, Communications, Information Management, Hospitality and Tourism or Photography
– Research, writing, and customer service experience
– Detail oriented, accurate typing skills, and good penmanship
– Excellent communication, information management and public speaking skills
– Interest and knowledge of railway, local or Canadian history
– Experience using photography equipment an asset
– Proficient using Microsoft office applications, including MS Word and Excel
– Flexibility to changing priorities
– Availability to work weekdays, weekends and holidays

Eligibility:
You are eligible if you:

• are legally entitled to work in Canada;
• are between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
• are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment;
• will not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with the program;
• have been a full-time student (as defined by your educational institution) in the semester preceding the YCW assignment; and
• intend to return to full-time studies in the semester following the YCW assignment.
